EJJP fact-finding trip to Israel, East Jerusalem and West Bank:19 February 2008 – 3 March 2008

The group held meetings with several organisations and people, principally:

  • Ramiro Cibrian Uzal, EU Ambassador to Israel, with the French and Slovenian Ambassadors to Israel. Purpose: to discuss the current circumstances of the occupation; to advocate that Israel will never end the occupation unless there are serious consequences for continuing it. Only the EU can impose such consequences in the absence of American action. Participants: Dror Feiler (JIPF,Chair), Dan Judelson (JFJFP, Secretary), Arthur Goodman (JFJFP)
  • Assistant Consul General, U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem. Purpose: to discuss the current circumstances of the occupation; to advocate that Israel will never end the occupation unless there are serious consequences for continuing it. The US must impose those consequences. Participants: Arthur Goodman (JFJFP), Paula Abrams-Hourani, (JSGFN)
  • Amos Gil, Executive Director of Ir Amim. Purpose: to understand the significant changes in Jerusalem that Israel has been creating, and how that is making it progressively more difficult to share the city equitably between Israelis and Palestinians. Participants: Richard Kuper. Arthur Goodman and Diana Neslen (JFJFP), Paola Canarutto (RETE).
  • Richard Makepeace, British Consul General. Purpose; similar to the meeting with the EU Ambassador to Israel. Participants: Dan Judelson, Arthur Goodman
  • Boaz Karni, Secretary of Economic Cooperation Foundation. Purpose: to understand the readiness of the Jewish Israeli public to accept a peace agreement similar to the joint Israeli-Palestinian Geneva Initiative proposals. Participant: Arthur Goodman
  • Orli Wahman, Imago Project (Israeli-Palestinian dialogue). Purpose: to understand the success and limitations of the project, and why it was discontinued. Participant: Arthur Goodman
  • Amira Haas, Haaretz journalist; Akiva Eldar, Haaretz journalist; Mustafa Barghouti, General Secretary of Palestinian National initiative; Wassem Khazmo and Gregory Khalili, Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Negotiation Affairs Department; Dr. Ayman Daragmah, Member Palestinian Legislature, Change and Reform Party; Yitzhack Gilady, Jewish Israeli post-master, Jewish quarter of Jerusalem Old City; Chagit Segal, Jewish Israeli painter, old Jewish quarter Jerusalem; Zakaria Al-Qaq, Vice President for External Affairs, Al-Quds University; Bassem Eid, General Director, Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group. Separate meetings, to understand the effect of the occupation on both populations and their readiness to accept a Geneva Initiative type of peace agreement. Participant: Arthur Goodman
