Lobbying Meetings February 2015

With an Israeli election imminent, EJJP takes the opportunity to reinforce its advocacy that the EU should progressively curtail doing business as usual with Israel as long as the Israeli government persists in acting as if it is above the law. By so doing, the Commission would not only be supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, it would also re-establish the European Union’s credibility as an organisation that respects international law and human rights.

Leonello Gabrici, Head: Israel, Occupied Territories, Middle East Peace Process
4 February, 2015

Dear Mr. Berger and Mr. Gabrici,

We are writing to request a meeting to discuss the actions the European Commission can take to influence Israel to negotiate meaningfully to end its illegal occupation and settlement of Palestinian territory. It is self-evident that this Israeli government, like the previous one, was unwilling voluntarily to end the occupation along the internationally legitimate parameters.

The next government could unfortunately be the same. If it is, it will also be self-evident that Israel will have to face significant costs for continuing the occupation if it is ever to agree to end it. The European Union is in a unique position to impose such costs. There are several measures the Commission could take to progressively curtail doing business as usual with Israel as long as the Israeli government persists in acting as if it is above the law. By so doing, the Commission would not only be supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, it would also re-establish the European Union’s credibility as an organisation that respects international law and human rights.

One or more of us will be available in Brussels on Friday 20th February, Monday 23rd February and Tuesday 24th February. I hope to hear from you shortly to arrange a meeting.

Yours sincerely,

Dror Feiler, Chair of EJJP and Judar for Israelisk-Palestinsk Fred (Stockholm).
Arthur Goodman, Diplomatic and Parliamentary Liaison officer, JFJFP (London)
